This is the who, what, and why all in a couple sentences. High level overview.
We are located at 1915 Penmar Ave, Venice, CA 90291 and are open Monday - Saturday 8AM - 8PM and are hoping to add Sunday hours soon! The surrounding streets of Palms, Penmar and Nowita, do not require permits to park, so you should be able to find street parking since we do not have a dedicated lot. We have a bike rack to lock your bikes to. In addition there is a fence on the property on Penmar that you can lock your bike to as overflow.

We accept cash, all major debit/credit cards, Apple pay, and unfortunately we do not accept SNAP/EBT at this time. Sooo are we going to awkwardly turn the screen around and ask for a tip for doing nothing? No, we will not be doing that. No tips, extra of hidden fees, etc. The price you see is what you pay, excluding our prepared items, which do have sales tax.
Hello! We're Philip and Kaila. Our journey led us to our home in Venice 6 years ago from the midwest. We came across Mitchell's Market and become friends with the previous owner, Mrs. Wu.
We wanted to ensure that this stayed a community market and avoid developers doing something silly with the property. This is a lengthy answer so if you want more detail see here. It is our goal to simultaneously preserve and progress the space. The neighborhood is complex, diverse and ever evolving. We want the products , pricing , clientele and vibe to reflect that.
Welcoming place that brings together every person from the community. When you gentrify and price out or “taste out” locals, it is not a community market anymore. It’s a market for transients and travelers. It creates barriers to entry and an invisible velvet rope in front of the door for pockets of the community. This creates barriers between classes, races, backgrounds , etc. it drives divide between the people of the community. This is intended to be a market that is by the community and for the community. A reflection of the community itself.
We have poured our blood, sweat, tears, time and resources into it. We hope that comes through, and we hope you love what we have to offer. I also felt a calling to enact responsible business practices. I come from the world of private equity , which has many greedy and selfish individuals in it. They sucked the money out of their companies for their own personal enrichment instead of reinvesting it and benefiting the employees, customers and vendors. I found their actions deplorable and vowed to start my own venture that went against all the ways that they viewed their businesses. This is not a personal piggy bank.
This is a way to connect with people and make their life better and more sustainable. Whether it’s eating a little healthier, saving a little money, finding a sweet treat they hadn’t seen before or connecting with a neighbor who they have passed on the street many times, we hope we can improve the lives of our neighbors. We only charge what we need to pay the bills.
Built in 1924, was originally believed to be a garage for the four residential units. Then in 1935 a conditional use permit was approved in 1935 to convert this space to a local market. Has operated as such since, continusly, for 90 years. Has gone through numerous owners and names. From owner Jack Bottom (named Jack’s during this period) to Gilbert’s, Mitchell’s and now Bodega and Palms.
